Definition
An instrument consisting of a wooden or tin conical bore that narrows toward the foot; perforated with four or more finger holes on the top side and one, two or none on the underside and usually with no key; equipped with a constricted metal or ivory mouthpiece inserted with a fipple plug and sometimes a sponge. Used to produce high-pitched sounds by blowing air over the labium lip, thereby causing the column of air in the bore to vibrate.
