Definition
A rectangular piece of fine linen. It has a red embroidered cross in the center and ties at the two ends. Used by Christian priests and bishops, such as in the Roman Catholic church, to cover the neck and shoulders during the celebration of mass. It is worn under the alb to protect it from neck perspiration.
