Definition
An ankle-length robe, made of cloth and of various colors, worn under the surplice. It has a standing collar and is usually form-fitting, tied at the waist, and generally buttoned from hem to neckline. The sleeves may be decorated. Worn by members of the clergy during the celebration of mass, used to distinguish the rank of the religious order. It is also worn by a choir member.
