- Definition
- A low metal fence of iron or brass placed in front of the fireplace. It is sometimes pierced and decorated with motifs and is often designed to match the apron of the grate. Used to prevent coals or ashes from rolling into the room and burning the floor or carpet. It is also used as decoration.
