Definition
A hearth cover, made of metal or wood, that is sometimes painted and decorated, and that fits snugly into the framework of the mantelpiece. Used to temporarily block off the hearth for the summer or to permanently seal it up. It may also be used at night to prevent heat loss up the chimney and or to keep soot, draughts, or birds out of a room.
