Definition
A mechanical instrument consisting of a viol-shaped resonance box; four strings sounded by a crank-handle-operated rotating wheel with rosin on it; a keyboard and tangent mechanism and a series of tuning keys. Used to produce sounds and chords by the rubbing action of the tangents, thereby causing the strings to vibrate.
