Definition
An instrument consisting of a large, narrow-waisted, fiddle-type wooden resonance box with a bridge and pegbox at one end, a sound post in the middle, a tailpiece at the other end and a set of four strings strung from the tailpiece, over the sound post to the pegbox; equipped with an endpin. Used to produce sounds by rubbing the strings with a bow, thereby causing them to vibrate.
