Definition
An instrument consisting of a narrow-waisted, fiddle-type wooden resonance box with a bridge and pegbox at one end, a sound post in the middle, a tailpiece at the other end and a set of four strings strung from the tailpiece, over the sound post to the pegbox; sometimes equipped with a chinrest. Used to produce sounds by rubbing the strings with a violin bow, thereby causing them to vibrate.
