Definition
An underskirt that may be trimmed with lace and embroidered, quilted, or flounced and gored at the hem. It is usually a little shorter than the outer garments, and is held in at the waist by means of ribbons, lace, buttons, or elastic. Used to protect the lower half of the body from the cold, to protect the outer garments from soiling and to add fullness to a woman’s skirt.
